Academic Success staff provides accommodations and support for students with documented disabilities who register with their office. The accommodations enable students to fully participate in programs and services available at Niagara University in Ontario and can include extended time on tests in a separate quiet location, note-taking support, interpreters, alternate formats of printed materials, housing accommodations, etc.
Members of the ASC staff are trained to provide direct support to students participating in some of our outreach programs to help them manage their academic transition to college and/or to improve their academic performance, develop study skills/behaviours, and utilize a variety of university resources, as needed, to maximize their academic success.
Professional and peer tutors are available through the Writing Center to assist students. Sessions last up to 30 minutes, and tutors are trained to help with any part of the writing process, from brainstorming, to outlining, to drafting, but they do not proofread papers!
Niagara University in Ontario has a responsibility to provide program access (including physical access, access to programs, services, activities, and instruction) to qualified students with disabilities. This means that the University provides reasonable and appropriate accommodations, academic adjustments, and/or auxiliary aids for individuals with disabilities upon request. Reasonable accommodations may include providing printed materials in an alternative format, an interpreter, access to assistive technology, relocating services to accessible locations, and providing extended time on tests.
All students must meet the academic standards set for admission into Niagara University in Ontario. Once admitted to Niagara, a student with a disability is responsible for disclosing and documenting the current substantial limitation(s) they are likely to have in the college setting — both inside and outside of the classroom — that support the student’s need for accommodation/ services. Current and comprehensive disability documentation must be provided to Accessibility Services from a qualified provider (unrelated to the student) who is treating, or has individually assessed, the specific disability for which accommodations are being requested. This documentation will assist Niagara’s Accessibility Services in determining eligibility for disability-related accommodations/services needed at Niagara University on a case-by-case/course-by-course basis each semester.
To ensure consistent accommodations with each student and to inform students of available support services, please make referrals to Kelly Engert, coordinator of accessibility services at 716.286.8541. Prior to receiving accommodations, a student should obtain a signed “Niagara University Accessibility Services: Course Accommodation Approval Form” from Accessibility Services.
