Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Important Update

On January 22, 2024, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the following immigration updates in an effort to stabilize Canada’s economic growth.

Important: Please note, students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees, as well as private universities, are not affected by these changes. As such, Niagara University in Ontario remains PGWP eligible and unaffected by the following updates.

Post-Graduation Work Permit Program Updates

  1. Public College-Private Partnerships (PCPP): Starting September 1, 2024, international students who begin a study program that is part of a curriculum licensing arrangement (one where a private college has been licensed to deliver the curriculum of an associated public college) will no longer be eligible for a post-graduation work permit.
  2. 3-year PGWP for graduate-level degree holders: Graduates of master’s and other short graduate-level programs will soon be eligible to apply for a 3-year work permit.
  3. Graduate-level degree programs eligible for Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP): In the weeks ahead, open work permits will only be available to spouses of international students in master’s and doctoral programs. The spouses of international students in other levels of study, including undergraduate and college programs, will no longer be eligible.

As always, we are here to support you. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding these updates, please connect with NUO Student Services or attend a virtual drop-in advising session (Wednesdays, 4PM to 5PM ET) for additional support
